When looking at fertilizers remember the phrase "up, down, and all around" to determine what ratio of ingredients is best suited for your particular gardening needs. Fertilizers primarily supply three main nutrients Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) with additional micro nutrient suppliements depending on formulation. The fertilizer number - for example 6-8-6 - provides the percentage of the main three nutrients in the package by weight. The first number refers to the nitrogen content of the product; nitrogen promotes growth above the soil. The second number refers to the phosphorus content; phosphorus promotes growth below the soil and is also critical in the development of flower blooms and fruit production. The third number indicates the proportion of potassium; potassium is key for the development of strong cells which allow plants to thrive despite the stresses of the natural environment.
